Description
A botanical painting by Caroline Lush. This watercolour image depicts a range of native New Zealand plants and insects including a fly or cricket and a butterfly or moth. The plants include a flowering Pratia angulata (dated Jan 1885) which has white flowers, and a Waiu-atua (Rhabdothamnus Solandri) which is a spreading shrub with clusters of bright red flowers (dated Feb 1885). There is a hanging moss (Weymouthia mollis) with green and brown leaves (dated Jan 1885), and a Taro (Colocasia esculentum) plant with large oval shaped leaves (dated May 1885). A brown cricket or fly is shown sitting on one of the leaves. Above this composition is a butterfly or moth with white wings which have black edges with white ovals.
